What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘red light district’? All about sex, isn’t it? That’s also what I thought when I arrived at Geylang. Geylang is infamous for nightlife, sex toys stores and prostitution.

Initially, I was not interested in booking a room here since I went with family plus my sister brought a 9-month baby. However, the price was soaring in July (school holidays and Great Sale Singapore), so we decided to stay at Geylang.

Besides cheap, I got suites that will fit for a family. Perfect for us! Then, how does it feel to stay in Singapore’s red light district?

Safe-Not-Safe-Area

I stayed at Fragrance Ruby, which is very close to Aljunied MRT. It only takes 7 minutes walk. Arriving late at the station, I rushed to the hotel because the kid was sleepy. Walking at night is worrisome especially after I knew that Geylang is red light district area.

And dang, something strange happened! A man around his 40s was lying on the road, either sleeping or passing out.

I guess he was drunk because of the smell of alcohol around him. We left him since the baby already fell asleep. Our stomachs were soon growling, so we stopped at a halal restaurant Al-Bidayah. We ran into a weird situation again. My cousin Daud smoked outside and a bandaged man joined him.

He spoke Malay knowing we are Indonesian. This man told my cousin that he had beaten by his family until he hospitalized. He ended up borrowing money for medical reasons.

Daud realized an Indian at the next table gave him code to leave (worried my cousin didn’t know that bandaged man deceived him). Fortunately, the food was ready and my cousin asked permission to go to the hotel.

Overall, staying in Geylang is safe if you don’t travel alone. If you travel solo, do not walk at night. It is safer to go around in the morning or noon.

Family room type at Fragrance Ruby, Geylang, Singapore. There is 1 queen bed and 1 single bed for 3 people.

Compared to OYO Hotels, Fragrance Ruby presents a modern interior. Equipped with a private bathroom, this hotel also provides a clean and soft bed, air conditioning, TV, drinking water, towels, soap and shampoo, and clothes hangers.

Although the room is not spacious enough, there is a window to brighten up the room.

Room Service

The hotel provides daily housekeeping so it makes your room clean every day! The front desk is available 24 hours. They are so friendly.

Location

According to what some say Lor 18-20s is an area of legal prostitution in Geylang. Although located in Lor 20, Fragrance Ruby is far from adult contents and bars. The hotel itself situated in a very crowded place yet you can still sleep peacefully.

Geylang is full of culinary gems! A few minutes from the hotel, there is an Indian halal restaurant Al-Bidayah. There are Chinese restaurants too for you who want to taste different menus. About 5 minutes walk, you can find 7-11 (Lor 18) if you want to top up EZ-Link.

Talking about public transportation, Fragrance Ruby has a strategic location. You’ll see a bus stop in front of the 7-11. The nearest station from the hotel is Aljunied MRT. Geylang is also close to Changi Airport and other city centers, such as Bugis, Chinatown and Little India. It’s just far enough if you want to Universal Studio Singapore.

It’s so exciting to stay here!

Price

$499.35 for 3 nights (4-7 Juli 2019)
I booked 2 rooms: a family room and a double room.

The family room can accommodate 3 people (1 queen bed + 1 single bed), while a double room for 2 people (1 queen bed). Baby won’t be charged unless the child is over 12 years.

Family room – S$ 300.98
Double room – $ 198.37

How to get to Fragrance Ruby?

I departed from Changi Airport (Terminal 2) and it was easier to use MRT than bus. First, select the East-West Line MRT that goes to Tanah Merah (2 stops). Transfer in Tanah Merah to continue to Aljunied (5 stops).

You exit from the Aljunied station and head towards Geylang Chinese Methodist Church. Continue straight until you find a big crossroad. Turn right, then go to Lor 23. Go along to the end of the alley. You can see Al-Bidayah restaurant on the right. Fragrance Ruby is next to the restaurant.

MRT costs S$1,55 from Changi Airport.

After knowing my experience, would you decide to stay at Geylang?
